A semi-distributed approach to rainfall-runoff modelling--a case study in a snow affected catchment

چکیده
A semi-distributed hydrological model was applied to a small forested catcment in southern Finland. The aim was to demonstrate how differences in terrain properties could be taken into account in modelling runoff generation, and to test how well the presented model simulated streamflow with only limited calibration. Modelling was based on subdivision of a catchment into topographically similar areas, which were identified from a digital elevation model. The water balance in each area was calculated using a hillslopescale model. Discharges from the set of hillsope-scale models were combined with the aid of a routing procedure to yield the total streamflow at the catchment outlet. The catchment receives approximately 30% of the annual precipitation as snow, and thus a snow model was required in winter periods. The presented semi-distributed model was capable of reproducing fairly well the measured streamflow when only two model parameters were calibrated against streamflow. The results suggested that unlike the cumulative runoff, the temporal variability of runoff response was affected by terrain topography. Only minor differences were detected in reproduction of streamflow between the semi-distributed model and a simple lumped model IHACRES used as a reference. 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A probability distribution function approach to modelling rainfall–runoff response for data-sparse catchments
A rainfall–runoff (RR) model considering the spatial variation of rainfall, soil infiltration capability and soil storage capacity over a catchment and based on probability distribution functions, is used for rainfall–runoff modelling. The model combines infiltration excess (Horton) and saturation excess (Dunne) mechanisms. Moreover, it is applied to a data sparse catchment. Model parameters of...

متن کاملA comparison of regionalisation methods for catchment model parameters
In this study we examine the relative performance of a range of methods for transposing catchment model parameters to ungauged catchments. We calibrate 11 parameters of a semi-distributed conceptual rainfall-runoff model to daily runoff and snow cover data of 320 Austrian catchments in the period 1987–1997 and verify the model for the period 1976–1986. We evaluate the predictive accuracy of the...
متن کاملInvestigating the ability of artificial impermeable surfaces in harvesting snow water (Case study: East Azarbaijan Province, Tabriz)
Atmospheric precipitation is one of the most important sources providing water for various purposes. Their optimal use, especially snow and rain in arid and semi-arid regions, can play a significant role in meeting water needs in low water seasons, which can be collected and stored before they come into contact with the soil surface and become contaminated so that in times of water shortage, To...
